Abstract:
Poetry is the crystallization of language and it is a most ancient form of literature. People always use it to convey their internal feelings. So the emotion of poetry comes from a poet’s real feelings for outward things. Thus poetry is a common way for poets to express their ideas and feelings. Besides these, poetry can show a vivid and real picture of people’s living at that time. This essay is mainly made of several aspects. In it, readers can know a poet’s opinions and can be deeply impressed by the unique style of the poet’s works and the language features of poetry through introducing Philip Freneau, describing historical background and the analysis or comparison of his two best lyrics that are “The Wild Honey Suckle” on mortality and “The Indian Burying Ground” on the imagined afterlife. Meanwhile, readers will enjoy poems better with grasping feelings of the poet and his poetry reflecting the social background at that time.
