ABSTRACT

Gone with the Wind is the only novel written by Margaret Mitchell and is also the one which she spent almost ten years on. Since it is published, a number of scholars and critics both at home and abroad have conducted a number of careful researches on it from different perspectives. This paper is going to apply relevant theories proposed in the treatise The Second Sex by French well-known existentialist Simone de Beauvoir, one of the founders of feminist movement, to analyze Scarlett's gradual formation of feminist thoughts according to time sequence. It describes Scarlett's living conditions and inner emotions before the Civil War, during the war as well as after the war respectively. And it especially portrays her attitudes towards love and money. From the thesis, it can be known that Scarlett grows gradually from a traditional belle into a complete new woman with the development of war. Before the war, she is a well-spoiled, rebellious daughter of a rich plantation owner; during the war, she successfully turns into a strong and courageous widow who is not afraid of mundane prejudice and various difficulties from; and then after the war, she completely grows into an independent protector of her land and her family. Because of those handicaps and difficulties, during this course, her attitudes towards love and money have gradually changed. Therefore, her feminist consciousness has developed greatly. Researching on Scarlett's feminist thoughts can inspire women in today's society to learn from Scarlett and actively seek freedom and independence regardless of various impediments and mundane prejudices.
