ABSTRACT
Stream of Consciousness is an innovative theory of literature and unique way of writing in the twentieth century. It completely breaks away from traditional set pattern, abandons description of objective reality and emphasizes human beings’ subjective feelings. Virginia Woolf is a representative writer of stream-of-consciousness novel. She devotes herself to the reform and innovation of novel, presents the inner world of the protagonists and applies the technique of stream of consciousness to modern fictions successfully. Mrs. Dalloway is a masterpiece of Virginia Woolf, which is a typical stream-of-consciousness novel. The story compresses entire events to seventeen hours, depicting the mental activities of Mrs. Dalloway and psychopath Smith. This paper reveals the writing methods and features of Virginia Woolf’s novels of stream of consciousness by analyzing the technique of stream of consciousness novel. Through researches, the novel adopts three approaches of stream of consciousness—montage, interior monologue and free association. The three techniques break the limitation of time and space, penetrate into people’s inner world, and deeply depict wars’ hurt to human beings’ frail heart.
