ABSTRACT
John Ernest Steinbeck, one of the most influential American writers in 20th century, is well-known for his masterpiece The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The novel tells the stories that farmers in the central states in America migrate to California and search for a way out after bankruptcy during the Great Depression in 1930s, and portrays a scene of dust storms raging, failure of crops and barren land. Due to the human folly, of mankind, the ecological balance is seriously damaged. Steinbeck implies that humans’ greed plunders and ruthless contempt for nature are the initiator of ecological disasters.
This paper interprets The Grapes of Wrath from the perspective of ecofeminism, elaborates the ecofeminist thoughts from the aspects of natural and social life in The Grapes of Wrath, and specifically analyzes the two representative characters of ecofeminism in the novel, revealing the internal connections between nature and women. With the advancement of technology and development of economy, people’s living environment is getting worse and worse. Natural disasters happen increasingly frequently. To analyze The Grapes of Wrath from the perspective of ecofeminism has profound meanings. It can not only provide a new angle to interpret The Grapes of Wrath, but also points out that the relationships between man and nature as well as man and man are correlated and bond together.
