ABSTRACT
Toni Morrison is the first African American black female writer to win Nobel Prize in Literature. Most of her works have drawn on African American black history and real life. Beloved is the most remarkable one. The novel derives from the real story of a black female slave called Margaret Garner. The paper aims at studying Sethe from Black Feminism through three aspects such as the reasons for Sethe’s infanticide, internal monologue of Sethe, Beloved, Denver and the awakening of Sethe’s self-consciousness. On one hand, Sethe owns multiple identities of a black slave, a female and a mother. She is a miserable black female slave and meanwhile she is a mother loving her children, yearning for her children’s freedom, happiness and health. Above all, she is the epitome of many black mothers in reality. On the other hand, villainous slavery deprives her of her right to be a mother, making her the tools for child birth. Therefore, what she can do is wiping out her daughter’s body, making her obtain psychical freedom and get away from the slavery.
