Abstract:

With the play Pygmalion as the target, this paper investigates the effect of identity on Eliza Doolittle’s transformation from five aspects: her life goal, her understanding of the society, her self-respect and dignity, her revolt against oppression and inequality, and her confidence and independence. The analysis is focused on the development of the plot, dialogues between characters and the social background to interpret the process of her transformation from an uneducated cockney girl to a new independent woman. 1. Introduction
1.1 An Introduction to George Bernard Shaw
George Bernard Shaw is a worldwide-known dramatist. His career as a dramatist began in 1892 and lasted till 1939. He did not begin his writing smoothly. From 1876 to 1898, he wrote drama and music criticism and novels for some newspapers. From 1892 to 1893, the first period of Shaw’s plays, Plays Unpleasant, made their appearance. The next period is from 1894-1897. Candida, Christian Socialism and Arms and Man were written in this period. In the third period, from 1897 to 1899, he wrote Three Plays for Puritan. Pygmalion as a poignant satire was published in 1912. Heartbreak House (1917) shows the decay of bourgeois world. The Apple Cart (1930) deals with the theme of rivalry of England and USA. Too True to Be Good, which is one of his last plays, gives a full stop of his literary career. The most prominent feature of Shaw’s plays is that he is daring to attack on the guise of bourgeois horrible crimes and expose the ugly face of exploiting classes in public. In art, Shaw is good at showing the conflicts of characters and the main ideas through dialogues between characters.
