1. Introduction
1.1 John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck(1902-1968) is one of the most important American writer of the twentieth century. He was born in Salinas, a small rural town in California, no more than a frontier settlement, set in some of the world’s most fertile land. When he was young, he read widely especially in English classical literature under the influence of his mother, a schoolmaster. Supporting himself from childhood, he worked at a variety of manual jobs: ranch hand, trainee carpenter, painter, laborer and chemist, which offered him first-hand materials, observation of the attitudes; manners and language of the working people, in particular, the migrant farm workers. Under the influence of his enormous reading and his special life experience, he tends to observe and depict man’s various living condition in poor survival situation. In his creation, he internalizes his focus on material poverty into his unique way of experiencing the world which helps him successfully describe man’s unconquerable dignity in huge intolerable pain. American land and working people are popular themes in his works where he speaks for the poor and defends for them. ,英语论文网站 |
