Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze the causes of the love tragedy between Gatsby and Daisy in The Great Gatsby. It mainly analyzes the internal and external causes leading to Gatsby and Daisy’s love tragedy. The external factor includes two divisions: the influence of Money-worship society and the barrier of rigid social hierarchy. The internal factor also involves two aspects: the protagonists’different views on love and their own character flaws. It concludes that Gatsby and Daisy’s tragic love is ascribed to the deformed society, protagonists’ distorted values and their own character flaws. Furthermore, this paper points out that the love tragedy is the epitome of the decayed morals and fierce social conflicts in the Roaring Twenties.

1. Introduction
F.Scott Fitzgerald is widely considered as one of the finest American writers of the twentieth century. In his life, he finished four novels and lots of short stories. Among these novels and short stories, most of them are paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age, which was coined by himself. His first novel-The Side of Paradise was published in 1920, which helped him win the fame and earned a lot of money. Due to this success, he married Zelda Sayre. Then the couple lived a colorful life of many parties and spent money extravagantly. Shortly after, the debt of Fitzgerald began to grow, at the same time, Zelda discovered that she was pregnant. Under the pressure of life, Fitzgerald started to write a large number of short stories for The Saturday Evening Post in an effort to support his expensive lifestyle with Zelda. In the late 1930s, Fitzgerald suffered from two heart attacks. On December 21, 1940, Fitzgerald died in Hollywood.
