1.1 Background
As one of the most famous English realistic novels in the 18th century, Daniel Defoe’s masterpiece, Robinson Crusoe, is not only a pioneering creation of English adventure fiction but also a representation of colonial literature in that period. This thesis will make a specific analysis on Robinson Crusoe through the colonial perspective which could be subdivided in three aspects. First, writing style: this novel applies First Person Narration to narrate the story and uses many colonial discourses. Second, treasure: what the hero Robinson did was marine slave trade, managing plantation and ruling the desert island which consequently made him an early colonist. Third, colonial reformation: Robinson changed Friday and distorted the native culture in order to accomplish his cultural colonization plan. The deep analysis will show a strong colonialism in Robinson Crusoe as well as Robinson’s real image—an exact colonist.
