1.    Introduction
Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961), born in a doctor’s family of the Oak town, worked as a journalist after graduation from high school. In the WWI, Hemingway responded to a Red Cross recruitment effort and signed on to become an ambulance driver in Italy where he was seriously wounded by mortar fire at the front line. After the war, Hemingway got acquainted with writers in Paris, such as Gertrude Stein, James Joyce and Ezra Pound who could help a young writer up the rungs of a career.
His early short stories In Our Time, published in 1925, received considerable praise. Henceforth, many famous works were published, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Old Man and the Sea. In 1954, he was awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature for his mastery of modern narrative art.
