Abstract:
David Herbert Lawrence was a famous British novelist in the 20th century. And Sons and Lovers was his masterpiece. In this work Lawrence explored the relationship between male and female. Through analyzing three relations Mr. and Mrs. Morel’s marital relations, Mrs. Morel and Paul’s mother-son relations, and Paul and Miriam’s love relations as well as Lawrence’s own growing environment, this thesis reveals Lawrence’s antipathy of women who have a strong desire for success and controlling others;and that men should be in a dominant position in the interaction between men and women. And meanwhile, the thesis reveals Lawrence’s advocating of his unique views on females, that is, men superiority—men should be in a dominant place in the male and female relationship.

1. Introduction
D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) was an accomplished but quite disputable English writer in the 20th century. Sons and Lovers was written by Lawrence in 1913, and it is said to be an autobiography of him. Lawrence was born in Eastwood (the Bestwood of the novel). Like Paul in the novel he was also a younger child in a mining family, living in a large village near Nottingham. His father, a semi-literate miner who spoke the local dialect, was essentially working-class inhabits and outlook, while Lawrence’s mother was a proud and relatively refined and educated woman, who came from a background somewhat superior to the mining community into which she married.(Moynahan 1968) She was disappointed in her miner husband and unhappy in her marriage. They had always noisy arguments which frightened their children. So Mr. and Mrs. Morel in Sons and Lovers are fictional portraits of his father and mother though his father is not quite as rough as Morel.
Sons and Lovers breaks through predecessors’ composition tradition; he uses unique perspective, lyrical style, and meticulous brush to descript the mother’s emotional changes from her husband to her son. It was a profound show of women’s inner world. The novel helped Lawrence win a wide reputation for the first time and aroused a wide attention of critics from various fields.Domestically, the studies on Sons and Lovers are numerous. Some adopted Freud’s psychoanalysis to analyze it, pointing out that the relationship between Paul and his mother is in coordination with Freud's psychological theory--"Oedipus complex". Others analyzed the main characters in the book. Also someone criticizes from the symbolism perspective. This paper tries to analyze Lawrence’s perspective of women based on the three pairs of relations in Sons and Lovers: the marital relationship between husband and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Morel; the mother-son relationship between Mrs. Morel and Paul, and the relationship between Paul and the loves, Miriam and Clara. ,英语论文题目 |
