Abstract

George Bernard Shaw, a famous British dramatist, composes one of his representative plays, Pygmalion, referring to the elements of Greek mythology. Different from the original myth, the play reveals Shaw’s exploration of female self-creation, through which a new woman image, who is rebellious and calls for independence and equality, is brought to light. Besides, this play serves as an embodiment of heroine’s intense awareness of women’s rights. Up to now, there have been many academic discussions on it from different perspectives. This paper aims to analyze the heroine, Eliza Doolittle, in the light of feminism. This thesis examines the process of her external change(language, clothing, behaviour) and internal awakening, and at the same time, explores the reasons of her self-awareness from the perspective of family background, individual character as well as the social factor. Thus, this paper will promote our deep probe into the process of female arousal of self-consciousness and provide the evidence for the research and introspection of modern woman’s social status and their living conditions.

Key words: Pygmalion, feminism, transformation and awakening
