Abstract

Virginia Woolf is one of the most outstanding writers, theoreticians and critics of 20th century. Being considered as the founder of the modern Stream of Consciousness, she is also a pioneer of the western feminist movement. Mrs. Dalloway is considered as the representative works of Virginia Woolf in which her technique of stream-of-consciousness has reached its peak. The novel also embodies her distinctive and unbreakable feminist perspectives, as well as the emergence of the feminist consciousness.
This thesis argues in what way Mrs. Dalloway embodies Woolf’s unique feminism and inspires her readers of both sexes to pursue the Gender Equality. After a brief introduction to Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway, there comes the contrast between the traditional feminism and Woolf’s feminism. The essay expounds on the analysis of the perspectives of feminism involved in the novel such as the female consciousness, the latent lesbianism of the characters and the female’s pursuit of professional success. The paper ends up with the conclusion that Mrs. Dalloway is not only permanently memorized as an accomplishment in the history of Britain literature, but also tremendously contributed to a new epoch for the process of feminism. Woolf’s feminism view greatly influences her writing and her view of the world. Appreciating not only Mrs. Dalloway but her other pieces could greatly help to understand Woolf herself and get a better understanding of the real meaning of the ideas which Woolf promoted.

Keywords: Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway, Feminism, Lesbianism, feminist consciousness.
