The thesis will first study Toni Morrison’s view on motherhood and other experts’ views on motherhood will also be discussed. Then, this thesis will analyze four causes for deformed motherhood in Beloved. They are: the heroine, Sethe has no right to be a competent mother, the influence on Sethe from Sethe’s mother, the black slavery system and the black community. The thesis will pay special attention to two different types of motherhoods--one is Sethe’s mother-in-law’s depressed and cold-blooded motherhood, the other is Sethe’s strong but too “thick” motherhood that causes deformed motherhood in this story.
