Abstract
As we all know, A Farewell to Arms is one of the Hemingway’s famous novel about war. Many people have studied especially the hero of the novel. Most of them think that Henry is a real hero, while for Barkly Catherine, they show opposite views and think she is a woman with no personality and independent view, just knowing how to obey selflessly. In fact, this is not the whole Catherine. The real Catherine is a woman with both tragic and brave qualities. The “dauntless spirit” and “survival principle” are the important aspects of her character. On the one hand, Catherine, as a female figure, is a victim of her time. On the other hand, more importantly, she is a “code hero” in every sense. It is her courage that promotes Henry to grow.
Key words: Hemingway; female image; braveness; tragedy; code hero
