Abstract
Emily Bronte was an excellent English poet and writer in 19th century. She published her only novel Wuthering Heights in 1847, which has established her status in the history of British literature and world literature. Wuthering Heights tells a story about a love tragedy between Catherine and Heathcliff. Catherine is a typical character created by Emily, who has been studied frequently in the past. This paper analyzes Catherine’s personality based on Jung’s persona theory, thoroughly discussing Catherine’s personality constituted of her different personas. The conclusion of the thesis is that Catherine’s love is infatuated and persistent. She is also a virtuous wife as well as a forthright “daughter” in front of Ellen, though she is not Ellen’s daughter. Catherine possesses different personality towards different people. However, those personalities are just derived from her different personas. Even Catherine herself has not realized what kind of person she is. By analyzing Catherine’s experience, people can realize that though no one can avoid developing personas, we should handle them appropriately.
Key Words: Catherine persona personality wife “daughter”
