Abstract:
Charles Dickens was one of the greatest English novelists of critical realism. His works showed the time of his age. His works exposed unfairness and hypocrisy of capitalist society. On the other hand, they expressed his strong humanism. This paper stresses the analysis of Pip, the main character in Great Expectations in order to achieve a better understanding of the work. In Great Expectations, Dickens focused on the moral value of the characters. Dickens expressed his value on morality at different levels. The core level was noble, honest and caring. Other levels of morality found in Dickens’ characters were changeable. However, the core level which belonged to the inherent quality of his characters was unchangeable. In Great Expectations, Pip was the one whose inherent quality lied in his nobility, honesty and kindness. In order to pursue the so-called great expectations, Pip gradually lost his ability to distinguish between the right and the wrong. At the beginning of the novel, his understanding of the great expectations was exclusively based on materials and the social status of the so-called gentleman. With his self-development and gradual maturity in his mind, however, he later realized that his original pursuit of being a gentleman in an upper class was not the real great expectations he wanted. Experiencing the frustration and all kinds of sufferings, Pip repented and strived to restore his lost nature which was honesty, kindness and being noble in his mind. In the process of Pip’s self-maturity, Dickens exposed his humanism that Pip was a “man”.

身为英国最伟大的批判现实主义小说家中的一员，查尔斯.狄更斯，他的著作具备了时代意义。它们揭露了当时资本主义社会中种种的不公平和伪善，英语毕业论文，体现了他强烈的民主精神。此篇是致力于描写查尔斯.狄更斯晚期著作《远大前程》中男主角皮普的文章，借此更好地理解这部作品。《远大前程》中，狄更斯加强了主人公们道德观的描写。其核心体现是高尚，诚恳及富有同情心的。之后，虽然狄更斯描绘出的主人公在道德观点上不断转变，但核心特征一直没变。高尚，诚实，友善的皮普就是其中之一。为了追求所谓的前程，皮普逐渐失去了辨别是非的能力。小说的一开始，他所认为的绅士是基于物质和社会地位的基础上。随着个性的不断发展和认知的不断成熟，英语论文题目，皮普意识到他一开始追求的成为上流社会的绅士并不是他的远大前程。在经历了种种挫折和痛苦之后，皮普突然醒悟并决定重新寻回失去的品质。很显然，通过描写皮普的悲惨经历，狄更斯真正想为读者展现的是：这样的皮普才是真正的人。

1 Introduction
Charles Dickens was one of the greatest English writers of critical realism. His works showed the life of his age, exposed unfairness and hypocrisy of capitalist society and expressed his strong humanism. Great Expectations, one of his most famous novels, was a book written in his late years. After encountering many kinds of life experiences, his attitudes toward people and life changed a lot. As a result, most of his mature thoughts were collected in this novel.
