Abstract:
Mark Twain, the great American realistic writer in the 19th century, is considered as the Father of Modern American Literature and Pioneer of American Humor. His masterpiece The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn has been praised for its remarkable originality.
This thesis tries to deal with the language style and major characters in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In the novel, Huck is the protagonist, who wants to lead a free life, and together with Jim, he comes across a lot of people and events. A very important factor in the novel is the use of vernacular or dialect, which is the focus of this paper. Because there was no native writer ever to write with vernacular before Twain, Twain is regarded as the Father of Modern American Literature. Right from the beginning of the novel, Twain wrote with vernacular, and therefore, this novel is full of humour and excitement. This thesis briefly studies the humorous style, vernacular and the main character. By doing so, I hope to arrive at a better understanding of the novel.
