Though it has been talked by many researchers from different aspects, some criticisms focusing on the theme, some on the structure, while some on the image, there has not been much focusing on the fairyland in this play. So this paper mainly uses reference method, inductive method and comparative analysis method to give a complete analysis of three effects of the fairyland in this play: fairy tale flavor, falseness and trueness and carnival feature. Through the thesis, the author hopes readers to understand more about the image of fairyland and the whole playwright when they appreciate the play of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. 1 Introduction
A Midsummer Night's Dream is a play written by William Shakespeare. Believed to have been written between 1590 and 1596, it portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors, who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies that inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play, categorized as a Comedy, is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world.
The author of the paper believes that the fairyland is the most attractive feature in this play and it plays a very important role, becoming a part of artistic characteristics of the play. In this thesis, I will give four chapters to explain what the effect of the fairyland is in A midsummer night’s dream.
