Abstract
Most of Pinter's works, especially early ones, often contain a thick layer of comedy effect, at the same time, the sense of mystery and menace are enshrouding the development of his works, and therefore, his works are crowned to be the “Comedy of Menace”. The stories described in Pinter’s plays mainly happen in a room, and the room as an image has indirectly influenced the shaping of the characters, This paper takes The Room and The Caretaker as examples, and analyzes Rose and Devise under the concept of Anxiety and Unconscious in the Psychoanalytic theory by Freud to achieve the purpose of interpreting the image of Rose and Devise, and explains the role played by the menace and uncertainties existing inside and outside the room in shaping  the characters. Under the guidance of these two concepts, this paper carves a new angle for analyzing the characters in Pinter’s works.

1 Introduction
Harold Pinter has been generally considered as the foremost representative of British drama after George Bernard Shaw, in the second half of the twentieth century. Considering the fact that The Room is his first drama and The Caretaker is the first of his plays to bring him artistic and commercial success as well as national recognition. Numerous researchers have studied the two plays in various aspects. However, few people studies the two plays from the psychological perspective. This paper endeavors to analyze the characters of the two people under the Psychoanalytic Theory of Freud. The Concept of Anxiety is one of the most important concepts in Psychoanalytic Theory, and the Concept of Unconscious is the foundation of Psychoanalytic Theory. Moreover, the two concepts play an important role in analyzing the mental condition of the two figures: Rose and Davies. These two concepts have covered a broad range of characteristic description and provide feasibility to highlight the hidden personality of the characters.
