Abstract

This essay rereads Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre from the angle of feminism, exploring three kinds of emotions——affection, warmth, and love——which follow the whole life of Jane’s, and reveals the facts that, firstly, on the premise of male power and blood theory, affection fails; secondly, on the basis of kindness and understanding, warmth wins; thirdly, under the guidance of feminism, equal love soars.

Key words: feminism; affection; warmth; love; blood theory

1. Introduction
1.1 A summary of historical background
Economically, the tale has witnessed the prosperous period of Victorian. It cherishes unparalleled economy power at home and soon spreads its influence abroad by setting up numerous colonies and robbing existing fortunes. Yet beneath the great richness and prosperity, there exists widespread poverty among the working class who are in worsening living and working conditions. Politically, after the Reform Bill of 1832, the political authority has been passed from the decaying aristocrats to the hands of the middle-class industrial capitalists. However, the increasingly developed social issues, such as unemployment, lead to the Chartist Movement. During these great movements, the consciousness of equality and democracy has been greatly improved among the working class. They, especially these women labeled as “angle in the house”, stood forward to defend their inalienable human rights. Culturally, England is still a country with strict structures of class identification. As to the marriage, the upper-class people are habitually considered to marry the ones who are in or above the same class. Under the laws of both God and Nature, women who are made from one of men’s ribs are usually treated as subordinates of the men. They have no independent thoughts and feelings just like a kind of commodity which is obedient to the powerful forces of the men. In a marriage, women have no freedom to choose their partners and control their personal property. It is her husband who holds the possession of his wife’s belongings and her person. What’s more, the right of divorce is forbidden by the Christian church. Once the couples get married, they have no choice but to remain their relation even though they have no loving family.
