Abstract
The Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk concerns about the relationship between vulnerable civilization and dominant western civilization. He tries to seek a way out for vulnerable civilization. In his masterpiece My name is Red, Pamuk rejects the absolute “nationalism” and “Westernization”, showing a preference for cultural hybrid. However, cultural conflict always has its complex economic, political and historic factors. The ideal cultural hybrid is not easy to reach in modern Turkey. According to the novel and Turkish current situation, this thesis believes that westernization and secularization is Turkey's better choice to get economic and political stability, and thus achieving its modernization.

The Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk ,“who in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures”(Nobel Committee awards the word), won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature with his masterpiece My name Is Red . From the surface understanding, “My name is red” describes an annihilation of an art form - Turkish traditional miniature and the conflict between it and Western perspective painting and portrait painting in their painting styles. Behind elegant miniature paintings, however, the author sees the conflict between two cultures through the confusion and struggle in heart of those miniature painters of the empire. The two painting styles represent two very different cultures and beliefs. Faced with the strong Christian “pagan” culture, the Muslim Turkish people have made different responses respectively, which results in a series of differences and contradictions. ,英语论文题目 |
