Abstract
Michael Cunningham is an American famous writer. The Hours, published in 1998, is his third works, which helped him win the Pulitzer Prize in 1999. This novel is written on the base of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway to pay his honor to Virginia Woolf and her classic work.
This thesis will focus on the intertextuality between The Hours and Mrs. Dalloway to analyse The Hours. And it will study the continuation and development of Mrs. Dalloway in The Hours, in terms of the writing techniques like the use of stream of consciousness, the imageries, the continuation of the feminism and the development of the homosextuality. Cunningham has expressed his views towards the relationship between women and men in The Hours, which should be harmonious rather than contradictory. And the trend towards the indistinct homosextuality in Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway has also been developed.
