Abstract: The Joy Luck Club is a best-selling novel written by Amy Tan. It has received continuing popularity after its publication. It describes four Chinese American immigrant families in San Francisco, California. In this novel, growing up in different cultural contexts, the mothers and daughters always contradict with each other and they find it hard to construct their cultural identities. As cultural symbols, Chinese food and Mahjong easily capture the attention of readers in the novel. So this paper takes mahjong as a point-cut to analyze the special function of mahjong in the process of female cultural identity construction in this novel. By this it shows the wisdom of mahjong and enlightens us in daily lives. |
