Abstract: It’s widely known that Voss is one of the representative works of Patrick White who is the first Australian Nobel Prize winner. His works have had great influence on Australian literary and even the whole world literary. Unexceptionally, Voss has drawn worldwide attention and brought about lots of discussion both at home and abroad. The paper is mainly concerned on the tragical sense of Voss from three respects. Firstly, his Platonic love with Laura which makes them miserable is bound to be excluded from the mainstream society. Secondly, the irreconcilable clashes of expedition members and the racial conflicts between whites and aboriginals result in the failure of expedition. Thirdly, the divine disillusioned is an indication of the loss of Voss’s faith. In a word, Voss is modeled as a tragical hero in this novel, whose spirit of adventure has inspired the Australian to keep forging ahead on this ancient continent. |
