Abstract: The Kitchen God’s Wife, as a representative novel of a woman’s struggle history, is still of practical significance although it was written in last century. In this novel, Amy Tan creates a strong female character—Winnie. Winnie was poisoned by Chinese traditional culture, including Confucianism and feudalism, and she had no right to speak for herself. So Winnie still kept silent no matter how much she suffered from the patriarchal society. Finally, because of the awakening of her feminine consciousness, she started to revolt against the patriarchal society and fight for her own rights. This paper attempts to analyze The Kitchen God’s Wife from the perspective of feminism. The focus of this paper is placed on the silent women in patriarchal society and women’s revolt from silence in old China. This paper gives a detailed analysis about how Winnie broke the silence and became a warrior full of revolting spirit. This paper exposes the women’s sad plight under the patriarchal society and their effort to get rid of patriarchal oppression and strive for equality, freedom and independence. |
