1. Introduction Language is the tool of communication. It is instrumental in that communicating by listening, speaking or writing is a purposeful act. However, generally speaking, the communicative ability in language study is comparatively neglected in Chinese college schools. For some people, language may not even be a worthy subject for academic study. They only take it as a tool for access to some other fields rather than study it as a subject in and of itself. On the contrary, for English majors, language is a mean of communication. Some may not realize the final goal of learning English is communication .Under the present examination systems , language knowledge is mainly tested rather than the communicative competence .This leads to a great dissatisfaction due to the obvious deficiency of communicative ability and listening ability. Though teachers and students work hard and try to make obvious progress in listening comprehension, it just can be found that it is本论文由英语论文网/ very problematic for many Chinese students to make progress in this area. It is surveyed that there are many reasons for English majors that lead to poor listening comprehension, such as poor listening foundation, bad study habits, lack of cross-cultural understanding and neglect training. Basic language knowledge involves phonetics, vocabulary and grammar, etc., but these three are the most essential elements of language. If scholars can not master basic knowledge well, they will have a direct bearing on the quality of their listening comprehension. There are some suggestions for English majors to train good listening skills. Primarily, students arouse a high interest to learn English. They should lay a solid foundation such as correct pronunciation, large vocabulary and good grammar, etc. In the course of learning English, the students should pay more attention to increase general knowledge, improve habits and skills in English listening, and raise reading speed. Meanwhile students learn to get rid of the mother tongue interference. And the last thing is to do more practice .To make great progress in one kind of language ability, one cannot depend only on the time in class. It is very important, especially for English majors, to learn to study independently. If all the things are done well in listening comprehension, one’s English listening level will be improved. 2. The survey 2.1 The research subjects The subjects are 41 four-year college students of Grade 2017 from school of foreign languages of Guizhou University for Nationality. They are 31 females and 10 males. 2.2 Research instrument The research instrument is a questionnaire. There are 20 main statements in this questionnaire, which covers four main factors that come up against in the course of listening comprehension for English majors. The statements are concerned with basic language knowledge, the cultural background understanding ,mother tongue interference, listening habit, the spoken English and reading, the speed and some other non-linguistic factors and so on. The twenty statements are single multiple-choice questions.
2.3 Data collection and analysis The questionnaire is administered under the supervision of teachers in class. The response rate is 100%.
