Chapter One Introduction 1.1 Research Background Language testing is an important measurement of foreign language teaching and learning,it is also a method to improve the quality of foreign language teaching and learning.The aim of language testing is to provide an efficient means for evaluating teachers’language teaching and learners’English language proficiency.This thesis introduces the significant link between passage dictation in TEM4 and listening teaching and learning.What’s more,this thesis will study how to improve listening teaching and learning by researching the washback of passage dictation in TEM4. Washback is usually defined as“the extent to which the introduction and use of a test influence language teachers and learners to do things they would not necessarily otherwise do that promote or inhibit language learning”(Messick,1996).This word of“washback”was given to explain the quality of relationship between test and teaching.Since then,foreign researchers began to study on the washback phenomenon.In the 1990s,this subject absorbed Chinese researchers.People study the washback effect from the diverse settings and points of views. TEM4 is a standard and authentic test for English majors during their fundamental studies.Its aim is to examine the students’English major’s professional skill level.However,the scores of TEM4 can reflect not only the real English level of learners,but also the teachers’English teaching level.Passage dictation is one important part of TEM4,which is viewed as the effective assessment for the English listening comprehensive ability.Passage dictation is based on the psycholinguistic and linguistic theories,in which both language elements and different language skills are tested. 1.2 Research Purpose This thesis expounds the washback of dictation in TEM4 on the students listening learning and teachers’listening teaching on basis of analyzing the data of the research.The author tried to research on positive washback and negative washback on listening learning and teaching and put forward some suggestions to promote positive washback and avoid negative washback.To study these problems,the author made great efforts to the research through questionnaires,class observation and interview and eventually got some conclusions. 1.3 Research Significance According to Alderson and Wall(1993),a few researchers have established the impact of language test on language testing.The washback study has been developed for no more than 20 years.Besides a huge bulk of researches have been done by western researchers to estimate and study the washback in diverse classrooms,and when the domestic research on washback in China is not almost a blank any more. Even though,published literatural works on the washback of language testing in the past 10 years accounted for only 5%of the total.Therefore,many thesis of the washback were still based on the assumptions rather than facts.
