Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Background of the Research 
In colleges, there is a group of students whose majors are related to art, such as Performing  Arts,  Directing,  Music,  Décor  Design,  Animation  Design,  Theater  Arts, and  Directing  etc.  We  call  them  art  students.  They  usually  don’t  have  much motivation  to  learn  English  reading.  Reasons  can  be  divided  into  two  main  aspects. On  the  one  hand,  many  of  them  usually  have  far  lower  reading  ability  and  are  not interested in reading English. On the other hand, they are not required to pass CET 4 and their requirements for English also differ. In this case, even English teachers lose enthusiasm to teach art students reading, thus making reading teaching less efficient.  There  are  still  some  other  problems  in  current  reading  teaching.  Most  teachers still apply traditional teaching model which is ―teacher-centered‖. It can hardly arouse students’  interest  and  the  learning  efficiency  in  reading  class  is  low.  That  is  to  say, even if students are hardworking, they will not learn a lot and may not enjoy English reading class.  As mentioned above, the traditional way of teaching English, especially teaching reading  is  too  boring  for  art  students  and  this  may  discourage  them  from  being  fully involved  in  English  reading  class.  Therefore,  there  is  great  need  to  improve  the teaching method in reading class.

1.2 Significance of the Research 
With  the  rapid  development  of  globalization,  English  is  becoming  more  and more important. Nowadays, people get more and more information through websites, magazines  or  other  types  of  publications  in  English  all  over  the  world.  English reading comprehension has been becoming more and more crucial in current society. The objectives of teaching students English are to enable students to learn  basic language knowledge and practice basic language skills. According to College English Curriculum Requirements, students’ overall ability to use English should be improved, among  which,  reading  ability  is  the  basis  and  should  be  emphasized.  In  college,  for non-English  majors,  having  English  intensive  reading  class  is  the  main  way  to  train their  reading  ability.  However,  most  teachers  now  still  apply  the  traditional  teaching methods in reading class, which is more mechanical and easily to make students feel bored.
