Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 General Description of the Study
In our country, English is a compulsory course both in middle schools anduniversities. Reading, considered as one of the four basic skills in language learningand teaching, is very important not only as a language skill but also as language inputfor other skills to develop, it plays a more important role than other three skills. However, there are some wrong methods for the teachers to teach and the students tolearn, the teacher may teach the students words, phrases, and sentences just accordingto its literal meaning. Actually, many learners feel that they cannot effectivelycomprehend what they read. One major reason leading to this phenomenon is thatlearners have not mastered and applied effective reading strategies.Reading strategies refer to “the mental operations involved when readerspurposefully approach a text and make sense of what they read”. Barnett(1988).According to Baker and Brown (1984), reading strategies contain cognitive andmetacognitive strategies. As far as the cognitive strategies are concerned, they areconscious ways in dealing with learning, such as resourcing, deduction, grouping,note-taking, translation and elaboration. Researchers began to study reading strategiesin the middle of the 1970s and paid much attention to understanding what proficient, excellent and skilled readers typically do while they are reading. Researchersespecially focus on identifying the strategies used by high-proficiency readers.Johnson (2017) is right in saying that this kind of research has been useful to helpnon-proficient second language learners to increase their awareness of using those cognitive strategies and then improve their reading comprehension proficiency. This research paper focuses on the cognitive strategy theories application inreading and explores a better and more efficient way to teach English reading andimprove the students’ reading proficiency.
