1.1 Background of the Investigation
English reading ability is one of the important parts of English language skills. In recentyears, to enhance students’ language skills, the English teaching of senior high school pays muchattention to develop effective listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities which are the fouraspects of language skills, especially for students’ reading ability which is attached specialimportance. The reading ability training has put forward a higher request on speed, discourse,comprehension and so on. The English teaching materials also have strengthened the training ofcomprehension, summarization, inference, and the ability of judgment. To cultivate students’reading ability we should train them to obtain a kind of reading skills and strategies.

Just as thecurrent requirements of the new syllabus of high school English: let students make their purposeof English study clearly , improve their autonomous learning and cooperative learning abilities,form effective learning strategies, and improve students’ abilities in using English on the basis ofEnglish learning during the compulsory education period. But there are also a lot of problems instrategy teaching of English reading: from the point of view of teachers, the teaching methods ofreading are uneven. Sometimes teachers ignore the training of reading strategies. Too muchemphasis is placed on vocabulary and grammar. The traditional teacher-centered approach inEnglish reading teaching is not uncommon. From the point of view of students, they lack theabilities of autonomous learning and cooperative learning. They are short of effective readingstrategies. They have a low awareness of using strategies on reading.
The objectives set by the New Curriculum of English (2017) have four levels from LevelSix to Level Nine. The objectives on Level Seven are the ones that must be achieved by seniorhigh school students. Three are seven detailed objectives towards reading. (1) Students canobtain and deal with the key information from the article. (2) Students can comprehend mainidea of the article and understand author’s intention. (3) Students can get the meaning of the textthrough context. (4) Students can infer by clues of the text. (5) Students can get information fromInternet as required. (6) Students can read newspapers and magazines suitable for senior highschool students. (7)Students’ extracurricular reading quantity should achieve 230 thousand words.Therefore, it is not hard to see that the aim of English reading teaching in senior high school isnot only to improve reading skills, but to foster students reading ability, to nature students’abilities of strategy employment, then to lay a good basis for their life-long learning.
Since the 1970s, people have paid more and more attention to reading strategies research.Lots of achievements are put forward both in theory and practice. These achievements providevaluable Reference for strategy training and strategy research. But most of the relevant studiesfocus on university students or other adult learners. So the investigation on senior high schoolstudents’ reading strategies is greatly needed. Considering students’ age, intelligence, char |
