1.1 Background and purpose of the study
We enter new century which is characterized by abundant information and knowledge, Rapid growthof technology makes greater demands on leaner's reading ability, especially the ability to read in English.Firstly, it's known to all that English is not only the communication tool in global but also the language ofscience, technology and advanced research. Secondly, it’s necessary for people in various field andmultilingual background to develop reading ability to achieve personal and occupational goals. So, learnersneed even stronger reading ability to meet all kinds of requirements.To our pity, Chinese English learners lack real language environment needed for natural languageacquisition, reading is one important ways of acquitting the language knowledge input and a necessarylanguage skill of learning language. Nuttal (2017) Proclaimed that "the best way to improve yourknowledge of a foreign language is to go and live amongst its speakers. The next best way is to readextensively in it." However, according to the theory of the Modern Psychology Linguistics and Cognitivepsychology, reading is a complex process which can be influenced by background knowledge andcharacteristics of text. And during the reading process Goodman (1994) readers use a number of cognitivestrategies which operate together as the reader strive to make sense of the text.Learning how to regulate some kinds of strategies and monitoring cognitive process to achieve efficientreading is essentially important to make sense of text. McGuire & Yewchuk (1996) “It believed that theability to monitor comprehension through the use of mental cognitive strategies is an ingredient essential todevelopment of independent reader.

Reading teaching focuses more on the vocabulary, grammatical analysis and so on. Reading strategiesseem to be occasionally mentioned or taught, which lead to reading strategies provided by teacher neitherfully nor systematically. And the reading teaching become process through which the learners passivelyaccept formation rather than process during which actively extract and handle information by themselves.So readers are less often aware of decoding difficulties, they are seldom cognizant of breakdowns whenreading and frequently lack strategies to deal with their problem.In this context, the study related to cognitive strategies and strategy instructions have graduallyincreased, and these studies showed that strategy instruction enhanced reading. Meanwhile, thedisadvantage is that final results of instruction can't explain how the result comes into being and the process of changing can't be observed. Because the strategy acquisition was a continued process, thetypical methods applied to test the effects of strategy instruction are pretest-instruction-posttest. This kindof test method just offers us the result the product of strategy instruction. Wen (2017) proposed that moresophisticated methods should be adopted in the studies of learning strategies.This study focuses on process of reading strategies how to change moment to moment. Approachapplied by this study is micro genetic analysis to observe subtle change in application of reading
