1.1 Background of the study
Vocabulary teaching is the most basic and critical component in teaching process,just as D.A. Wilkins (1972),an outstanding linguist of British, mentioned in his book,"...while without grammar, very little can be conveyed,without vocabulary,nothing canbe conveyed." No matter for one's native language or foreign language, a large anduseful vocabulary is the foundation of one's language competence. In Listening,Students have to get the native-speaker radio and video programs, with the oral rate ofapproximate 130 to 150 words every minute, catching the general meaning and essential1information; Apart from the requirements in Listening, in Speaking, students shouldcommunicate in the process of learning in English,and they can discuss on a certaintopic,talk to each other on daily topic in English, they can deliver a short speech on afamiliar topic after preparation in clear expression, without mistakes in tone and accent,and they are able to use basic conversation strategies in discussion as well; besides,inReading,students have to understand the English articles on daily topics basically,withthe rate of 70 words in each minute. And speed should be kept as 100 words in eachminute on scanning on shorter and easier materials, including acquiring the capacities ofscanning and skimming. They are also supposed to read English materials in their ownmajors and familiar English newspaper and journals by understanding the central theme,main information and related details.
