Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Backgrounds
Subjunctive mood has been a controversial problem in English language,and itarouses various viewpoints during the course of English teaching and learning as asecond language. Both linguists at home or abroad and teachers in pedagogical fieldexpress different attitudes towards subjunctive mood concerning its meaning andunderstanding. Some linguists discussed its meaning and classification and some focuson its cognitive mechanism. All of them are trying to explore an easier and more directway of understanding and to facilitate practical teaching and learning of English.Subjunctive mood was derived from Latin but gradually lost its inflections in thelong history of evolution. It seems that subjunctive mood has lost its importance inEnglish grammar and there is little use studying it. Therefore,it is high time that all the linguists and Englishresearchers should give subjunctive mood a thorough and well-deserved analysis.Chinese learners firstly know subjunctive mood in senior middle school and soonget lost in this strange phenomenon and its complex use. Since subjunctive mood is notmanifested on verb forms in Chinese, it is imaginable for the confusion occurringduring its study. Here lies the difference between Chinese and English language and itbecomes a challenge for the cognition of Chinese students to understand and use itnaturally and accurately.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
To probe into the nature of subjunctive mood and dear the confusion in its use,this thesis explores the semantic and cognitive features of subjunctive mood to helpstudents understand and use it.The thesis analyzes subjunctive mood from the perspective of metaphoricalmapping and prototype and explores the cognitive motivation of this explanation, so inpractical teaching activities,英语论文,this analysis may work as a new view-angle and deepenthe tedious memorization to inner understanding. What the thesis wants to achieve is tooffer a novel method to pedagogical tactics and facilitate the teaching of subjunctivemood.Previous teaching practice usually lays emphasis on grammatical rules governingsubjunctive mood. English learners are forced to do mechanical memorization and theresult is far from satisfying. Errors and mistakes occur now and then, This thesis will help English learners with understanding and proficiency in use. Itmay also help practical teaching and learning by introducing the cognitive way ofgrammar-teaching.

2.1 Evolution of Subjunctive Mood
Old English can also be called Anglo- Saxon, which is the language developed byAnglos, Saxons and Jutes after conquer of England. It belongs to the Western Germaniclanguage branch of the Indo-European Germanic language family and is very close toGerman.
