Nominalization is very common in English written text. It is universally used in formalwritten text, and now nominalization has become a universal phenomenon in the formal textwriting. This paper will introduce the phenomenon of nominalization based on functionalgrammar. The research will be carried out by comparative analysis between excellentEnglish learners and native speakers using nominalization in academic writings.Nominalization means changing verbs or adjectives into nouns, but this is not onlyword classes' transformation.

It can be understood by narrow and broad senses. According tothe comprehensive grammar of English language, nominalizations are some special nounphrases which have related correspondence with the clausal predications, and they mainlyinclude some head nouns which are related to the corresponding verbs. But sometimes thecorrespondence may also be on the basis of accurate nouns and denominal abstract nouns.Generally speaking, nominalizations can originate from adding affixes to verbs andadjectives, and sometimes they are just the direct transformation from a verb to a noun.English nominalization is very irregular; for there are many different changes which mainlyorisinate from Latin and other fixed changes which are related to nominalization, and sometimes they even have no changes in word forms. But itis not necessary that nominalizations only take place in the word class change process. Theyalso concern the sentence structures and discourse functions.
For better understanding to nominalization. firstly it is necessary for us to understandfunctional grammar and its grammatical metaphor (GM) clearly.functional grammar and put forward the basic concept of GM. Traditional metaphormeans that the word which is used resembles something that it usually refers to. Ingrammatical metaphor, the variations are indeed represented in grammatical forms. (Halliday.2017). Halliday considered that "nominalizations play a very important role in creatinggrammatical metaphor. By the tool, processes (congruently worded as verbs) and properties(congruently worded as adjectives) are reworded metaphorically as nouns, that is to say.nominalization is a mechanism of grammatical metaphor and is often realized with somechanges in meanings and forms.
But in which conditions can nominalization be used? "Nominalization is not a bad thingindeed. Some of the nominalizations are important content for academic discourses.However, if we overuse nominalizations. it will cause the difficult understanding of somesentences.” It is overtly agreed that “Nominalizations (especially for verbs) are useful in‘jargony' registers for all kinds of reasons", which are widely agreed by all kinds ofempirical researches (Yang Xinzhang, 2017; Liu Guohui. 2017).Among the related researches of nominalization, there are many use methods ofnominalization in different genres. According to the related statistics, the genres are moreformal, the more nominalizations are used. But what are the differences between the nativespeakers and foreign language learners in how to use nominalization methods?So. the paper will analyze the different use methods of nominalization in the same genre,for example, the academic discourses written by the native
