In the curriculum for college English majors, the competence ofEnglish pronunciation is always found in oral English practice. At the elementary level,students should give short talk about familiar topics after they have leamt some vocabulary,grammar rules, and some knowledge about English pronunciation. At the advanced level,students should fluently and correctly discuss about general or professional topics,successfully dealing with lengthy and complicated conversations and texts, preciselyexpress viewpoints at academic communication meeting or international conferences(MOE-PRC, 2017). Such competence mentioned above should be based on StandardEnglish pronunciation.
But, some college English majors have difficulties in pronouncing English properly.Even though they can spell considerable English vocabulary and make sentences accordingto different patterns, they are still not so successful in communicating with native Englishspeakers or other learners of English* Their English pronunciation is more or less differentfrom standard which sometimes lead to misunderstanding. Occasionally they are laughedby their classmates, which makes them feel discouraged. They would shut their mouthrather than take the risk of being humiliated. So it is necessary to analyze college English majors'pronunciation errors and figure out some solving strategies accordingly.
First of all,people can achieve successful communication in English by expressingone's mind with standard utterance of carefully-chosen words. Misunderstanding amonginterlocutors is often caused by poor English pronunciation.
