1.1 Current Situation of English Grammar Teaching in Chinese Senior igh Schools在中国高级室内运动场学校英语语法教学的近况

Grammar teaching is an indispensable part in English teaching, and the New EnglishCurriculum Standard for the Senior High School (2017) claims that students in seniorhigh school students should leam and master the basic language knowledge includingpronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, function and topic. However, the effect of grammarteaching in senior high schools is not as satisfactory as expected. There are two trends ingrammar teaching:One is the overemphasis of grammar teaching. The main content in English class isteaching grammar. Teachers spend lots of time on explaining the grammar rules in detail,more attention is paid on linguistic form rather than meaning,and students memorize therules to finish a lot of exercises for the sake of understanding and consolidating thegrammar knowledge. In the whole class, students are busy in memorizing the grammarrules, the main learning strategy employed by students is memorization and mechanicalrepetition, and they have little time to practice the language, let alone using it. Besides,grammar is taught in an isolated way in which it is separated from listening, speaking,reading and writing. The problem is that students know a lot of grammar rules, but theycan not use the rules to communicate with others, and they are not good at listening andspeaking.

In order to improve thecommunicative competence, some teachers even give up grammar teaching completely.The New English Curriculum Standardfor the Senior High School (2017) points out that,the key point of English curriculum reform is to change the tendency of overemphasison grammar and vocabulary and neglecting students' practical ability of using language.Some teachers misunderstand this, and they think that “change the tendency ofoveremphasis on grammar" means abandoning grammar teaching, so they onlyemphasize students' communicative skills. The negligence of grammar teaching bringsout many problems. Although students' communicative competence is improved, especially the ability of listening and speaking, they lack accuracy in using language andcan not speak or write correct sentences without grammatical mistakes.


1.2 Significance of the Study
In China, the present grammar teaching in senior high schools is still characterizedby the application of traditional teaching method, which is known as the traditional 3Ps(presentation, practice and production) approach. This traditional approach is chieflybased on teacher's grammar analysis, and the students' task is to recite grammar rules anddo lots of exercises. This approach does not provide students with ample
