Chapter One  A Brief Review of Chinglish              
    Broadly speaking, there are seven language families in the world. As is known to all, English belongs to the Germanic branch in the Indo-European language family, while the Chinese language is an important member in the Sino-Tibetan language family. As the representatives of two different language families, Chinese and English differ greatly. As far as the writing system is concerned, the Chinese language consists of ideographic characters, whereas the English language consists of orthographic spelling. Because of different origin and development, English and Chinese are different in many other aspects, they are poles apart. The two languages are essentially different in word-formation, morphology and syntax on the one hand, and remarkably different in text structure and rhetoric on the other. However, when native speakers of Chinese learn English, they tend to lose sight of the differences between the two and the linguistic interference of Chinese, which appears in the form of Chinglish, always poses an obstacle to Chinese learners' learning of English. This is particularly the case with pronunciation, writing and translation, because Chinese learners of English have formed the habit of trying to pronounce and write in English what they would in Chinese. As a result, Chinglish runs riot in their language output.
    As a teacher and also as a language learner, the writer sees clearly the fact that Chinglish is especially a commonplace in non-English-major college students' language output, which inevitably hinders their learning of English. So removal of the grotesque phenomenon of Chinglish in students' pronunciation and written output remains of paramount importance for teachers of English as well as language learners themselves.
    As a matter of fact, the emergence and existence of Chinglish is by no means ephemeral nor coincidental. It has its theoretical and practical background. To expose a valid picture of Chinglish, this chapter intends to present the practical background of its origination and shaping in China and its distinction from other conceptions.  
1.1 Definition of Chinglish             
Seen in historical retrospect, a systematic study of Chinglish has never been in existence with regard to a comprehensive and thorough account of the forms and causes of it. However, this does not mean that people ignore the existence of Chinglish. In fact many teachers and scholars at home and abroad notice this language phenomenon and studies of Chinglish are scattered in books or articles in the field of English teaching and learning; nevertheless, due to the unsystematic and unsteady nature of Chinglish, people do not always resonate a clear and unanimous voice on what Chinglish is and hereby present diverse and incomplete definitions from different angles in definitions: light that with their own understanding. For example:
