1. World Englishes
1 .1 Introduction
Since the latter half of the twentieth century, the way English is perceived all over the world has recently undergone a great deal of change. The world has witnessed a phenomenon that English has become a world-recognized language as an effective means of communication around the globe. So far, English is the most widely taught, learnt, and spoken language in the world. As the trend of World Englishes is gradually attracting more and more attention, the concern that English is gOllla to fragment into "a family of Englishes" is no longer new to the current English situation. English is now, widely used as an international language.
According to Crystal (1985a) and Kachru (1999), English is used by over 300 million people as a first language in countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, and by over 700 million people as a second or additional language in the countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, etc二According to Crystal (1999), it is now estimated that all around the world, I ,500 million or more people are today thought to be competent communicators in English. The evidence suggests that English is now the dominant voice in international politics, banking, the press, the news agencies, advertising, broadcasting, the recording industry, motion pictures, travel, science and technology, knowledge management, and communications. No other language has achieved such a widespread profile in the foreseeable future.
1.2 The world-wide diffusion of English
The spread of English has been viewed in terms of two diasporas. According to Kaclwu (1992d), the first arose out of the migration of English-speaking people from Great Britain to Australia, North America, and New Zealand. The second, however, resulted primarily from the diffusion of English among speakers of diverse groups of peoples and languages across the world as a result of colonialism and other political and economic factors.
