[摘要 ]英语单词“culture” 不一定等同于“ 文化 ” ,而“ 文化 ” 不能都译为“culture” 。本文通过实例说明“culture” 的新义 ,并指出 ,英语单词和汉字的理解不仅要结合语境 ,而且还应该关系实际 ,译文表达不宜照搬字典里现成的对应词。
新华社翻译老前辈王季良先生在《翻译并非易事 — — —兼评当今一些新闻翻译 》 这篇论文中写道:“ 现在不少译者 ,尤其是国际新闻的译者 (其中包括驻国外记者 ) ,往往将某一英文单词固定地对译成一个中文词 ,以致造成错译 ”(王季良 , 2017: 93 )。文章列析的单词之一是“culture” 。王先生指出 ,“culture” 除了字典上的“ 文化 ” 和其他意思以外 ,还有字典上迄今没有的释义 ,即“长期培育起来或逐渐形成的一种风气、 风尚、 精神或氛围 ” (王季良 , 2017: 100) ,并用实例加以证实。其中一例是 (注:本文下划线为笔者所加 ) :
( 1 ) …The culture of the workp lace is apatheticand irres ponsible . ( fr om The B alti m ore Sun, June 30,1988) (王季良, 2017: 101)王先生对该句的解释是“…车间里的风气 (或车间里工人的风气 )是漠不关心和不负责任 ” 。王先生举的另一个例子是:

( by ZbigniewBrzezenski, Foreign Affairs, 1989 - 1990Winter) (王季良 , 2017: 101)这是布热津斯基对当年苏联政治风气的刻画。王先生认为“political culture” 应译为“ 政治风气 ” 。笔者发现 ,王先生对“culture” 的新解在英语中不时可见。例如:
( 3 )“In short, we need t o nurture a learningculture that operates on the leading edge of liberal artseducati on and pedagogy . ” [ 1 ]划线部分如果逐字译为“学术文化 ” ,不仅听起来非常别扭 ,而且不太达意。参照王先生的解释 ,不妨将它译作“ 学术氛围 ” 。又如:
(4)A Culture of Plagiaris m[ 2 ]这是美国 DrexelUniversity哲学教授 M. G . Pie2ty所撰写的一篇文章的标题 ,文章论及美国学术界的“ 剽窃之风 ” ,可见“culture” 的意思也是“ 风气 ” 。笔者翻阅英美期刊对于中国的文章时也碰到过不宜译作“ 文化 ” 的“culture” :

( P23, August21 st, 2017, The Econom ist)按照王先生的新解 ,根据众所周知的现实 ,可以认为“a culture of cynicis m and corrup ti on” 指中国医院里“ 医生受贿 ,病人愤恨 ” 这种现象。这样的诠释比“ 文化 ” 更具体 ,更准确 ,更易接受。实际上 ,不管是“ 风气 ” ,还是“ 氛围 ”留学作业定做 ,或是“现象 ” ,都可以归入“ 文化 ” 这个范畴之中 ,它们与《英汉辞海 》 和《牛津高级英汉双解词典 》(第四版 )对“culture” 的某些释义是吻合的。所不同的是王先生把文化的部分内涵具体化了 ,而字典的释义较通泛、拉杂 ,不宜直接使用。有时候 ,“culture” 的内容很难具体化 ,翻译时只有把它们概括在“ 文化 ” 之中。例如:

( P53, May 9,2017,B usinessW eek)王先生认为 ,外国人所说的“a cor porate cul2ture” 与中国公司头头所谈的“公司文化 ” 不是一码事 ,或者颇有出入。然而 ,国内译界总是把“a cor po2rate culture” 与“ 公司文化 ” 等同起来。此外 ,“公司文化 ” 是公司管理层默认的说法 ,一般不去细想它的具体内涵、 本质或影响。至于“the credit culture”和“banking culture” 可以分别译作“信贷文化 ” 和“ 金融文化 (包括银行文化 ) ” ,虽然外行会觉得很陌生 ,但在金融界或学术界是很通行的说法 ,还有高校拟开设“ 金融文化 ” 课程。
以上例句或多或少表明 ,“culture” 的含义很广 ,好似一个大箩筐 ,什么都可以往里装 ,于是 ,“cul2ture” 带上修饰语是非常自然而然的事情。即便如此 ,“…culture” 的内容仍然较为笼统 ,比较不确定 ,因而大多数情况下也只能译作笼统的“… 文化 ” 。反过来看 ,汉语的“ 文化 ” 如同英语的“culture”一样 ,含义也很广 ,而且不尽相同 ,所以也常带修饰语:“ 马雅文化 ” 、 “ 西方文化 ” 、 “汉文化 ” 、 “黄河文化 ” 、 “ 深圳文化 ” 、 “ 熊猫文化 ” 、 “ 监狱文化 ” 、 “ 休闲文化 ” 、 “ 茶文化 ” 、 “酒文化 ” ……,这类词组的具体内容同样较为笼统 ,比较不确定 ,同样可以考虑逐字对译。不过 ,有些时候“文化 ” 的涵义很狭窄 ,很具体 ,不宜直接转换为“culture” 。例如:如果把“文化下乡活动 ” 译为“bring culture t o the countryside” ;“culture2t o2the2 countryside drive” ;“disseminate cul2ture and knowledge in the countryside” [ 3 ],实难达到对外宣传的目的 ,因为它们都没有传达出“ 文化 ” 的确切意思。这里的“ ，英语论文范文，英语论文题目 |
