Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research background
With the trend of globalization, English is learned widely in the world. In China, some people try theirbest to learn English, but the result always make them disappointed. As we all know, there are fourlanguage skills in learning English: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Luo Yunzhen(2017) pointedout that reading is an important activity for learners. English reading is considered as the tool ofcommunication. Learners’ ability to read English should be improved. English reading is still the weakpoint in English teaching in middle schools. Most of the teachers often pay more attention to the grammarpoints and sentences structures. As a matter of fact, reading is characterized as a positive process ofcomprehending and teachers should teach students some strategies to read more efficiency. The oldtraditional ways mainly teach students to learn new words and grammar points in an isolated situation,ignoring the need to develop students’ skills in analyzing the whole text. In order to arouse teachers’attention to the integrative approach of teaching English reading in high school, and to consider theintegrative approach of teaching English reading as an important part to the whole classroom teaching, theauthor makes a research of the application of integrative approach in English reading teaching in No.2middle school, Xiping. First, the author aims to learn about the present situation of teaching Englishreading in middle schools. Second, the aims to know about teachers and students stand points for theintegrative approach of teaching English reading. Finally, the author analyzes the data and puts forwardsome reasonable advice on how to improve and enhance the effectiveness of English teaching reading inmiddle schools according to the analysis of the research results.

1.2 Research significance
With the development of the society, English has become more and more important as a means ofinternational communication all over the world. However, from a response to a questionnaire in No.2Middle School in Xiping, Henan Province, we find there are some problems about students’ reading skills.About 65% of the students spend little time doing any extensive reading. These students don’t have enoughvocabulary, knowing very little about the background knowledge of English-speaking countries. Although the teachers always pay more attention to develop the students’ English reading skills, and spending muchtime and energy on reading teaching methods and strategies, the result is always not satisfactory. Theintegrative approach emphasizes “integrality”, It needs whold stimulation, in integral situation, and takesintegral perception, imitation, application and reaction to content being taught. The integrative approach issupposed to be a good way to improve students’ language skills, to encourage students to use the languagewhile studying, and to improve the reading skills of those who are weak in reading. The author makes aresearch of the integrative approach in middle schools in order to learn about the present situation ofEnglish reading in middle school and existing problems and to help teachers to realize the importance ofthe integrative approach in teaching English reading.
