Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Aims of the study
This paper discusses the application strategy of Lexical Chunk Approach in HigherVocational College English teaching, and its effect on students' English writing ability. Theauthor hope to provide teachers a more effective teaching approach and help students toenhance their English writing competence in the awareness of lexical chunks.Traditionally, language learning is divided into grammar and vocabulary. Grammarconsists of structures and vocabulary usually consists of single words. It is considered to bemore important, and vocabulary is regarded as secondary importance. It is just used toexplain the meaning and scope for explanation of the grammar (Sinclair & Renouf, 1988).Vocabulary is regarded just as a filler to be put into the framework. The term Languageoutput is usually used to describe language performance. We use Language output to take theplace of a group of aspects of language performance, for example language production,production competence, language use, written English and spoken English, productive ability,speech and so on. Chinese English learners’ language production is obviously weaker thantheir comprehension of language. It means that one the most difficult problems in Englishteaching are to teach Chinese English learners how to write a good English composition.From the perspective of state intervention, Chinese government has paid more attention toforeign language teaching. The most obvious is the English teaching on all the stages. InChina the main feature of foreign language teaching is large coverage, long period and hugesubstances resources involved. The Higher vocational college students have studied Englishfor more then ten years. In school all students regarded English as their compulsory courseand so do many part-time learners. A lot of money was paid by the government on theEnglish education programme including the Curriculum development and execution ofexamination.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Our Motherland China as the country of the largest population owns the largest numberof English learners, with the increasing demand for vocational technical talents from highervocational colleges. With Their rapid development, they have become an important part ofeducation, so it is practical significance for higher vocational college students’ Englishwriting. As a new educational group, higher vocational students are different from theordinary university students, they have own characteristic instead.With the development of economic globalization and the entering to WTO, English isregarded as the most popular and widely used language which is taught in many countries inthe world. The ability to use and master English in practice is one of Essential skills. Englishnow has become one of the most important parts of Chinese education. The higher vocationaleducation bears vital duties and tasks of raising high-qualified technical persons for China.However, in the current English Teaching of higher vocational colleges is facing difficulties.And this has affected the development of English teaching quality and students' comprehensive quality seriously.
