1.1 Research Background
In the past two decades, English for special purposes, ESP in short has beenregarded by a lot of English scholars and teachers as having very significant effects onmeeting students' career needs. Based on this recognition, we believe that English forNursing Purpose (ENP) can also have the same functions in vocational nursing programs. In order to meet students' vocational needs, ENP course has been set up in many collegesand universities. In teaching ENP, teachers always highlights its special features invocabulary and grammar. Reading and translation are the most popular activities in class,英语毕业论文,英语毕业论文,with little interaction between teacher and students. On the one hand, teachers try tocover every language point but result in failing to stimulate students' motivation andarouse their interest; on the other hand, students see ENP is similar to general Englishexcept some special Medical vocabulary. Thus, the teaching effect is far from satisfaction. As Widdowson (1979) points out: “ the students' failure in using language is not so muchfrom a defective knowledge, but from the unfamiliarity with language use." In this sense,ENP teaching should emphasize its core, that is communication. Students should not onlyundCTstand medical documents but also interact freely with others. With the rapid integration of global economy and internationalization of medicaleducation, nurses caring for the overseas patients are in great demand in current society.According to the statistics, there was a shortage of 1,250,000 nurses in Americanhospitals in 2017, and it has been estimated there will be a shortage of more than 1million nurses in 2017.(赵萍 2017 : 216) Especially after China joined in WTO,international communication in medical field has been becoming more and more frequent.More and more nurses who care for the overseas patients are going to the outside world.Correspondingly, it is necessary for the nurses not only to grasp nursing skills andprofessional knowledge, but also to enhance their communicative competence in English. Therefore, English for nursing purposes,as a branch of EMP (English for MedicalPurpose) has attracted increasing interest and awareness. In China, the course, Englishfor Nursing Purpose was set up in December, 2017 and the Compiling Commission forNursing English was established afterwards. However, due to various reasons, a largenumber of students still are not able to communicate with clients in Englishappropriately.

Furthermore, it will do great help tothe training of qualified nurses caring for the overseas patients to meet the demands ofsociety. Finally it will be useful in the development of EMP teaching by providing somesuggestions. This thesis is composed of 6 of six parts.
