Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background
At first, the parsers select a wrongstructural analysis and later on they find that the initial analysis does not fit the overallstructure of the very sentence. In other words, a GP sentence is a grammaticallycorrect sentence that starts in such a way that the readers' most likely interpretationwill be incorrect; they are lured into an improper parse that turns out to be a dead end.According to current psycholinguistic theory, as a parser reads a garden path sentence,he/she builds up a structure of meaning one word at a time. At some point, it becomesclear to the parser that the next word or phrase cannot be incorporated into thestructure built up thus far: it is inconsistent with the path he/she has been led down.GP sentences are less common in spoken communication because the prosodicqualities of speech (such as the stress and the tone of voice) often serve to resolveambiguities in the written text.

1.2 Necessity and Significance of the Study
Because of the local ambiguity, the process and final results and the processingof disambiguation of GP sentences provide a platform for people to investigate theworking mechanisim of human brain, artificial intelligence, and language acquisition, and foreign language teaching practice and so on. In recent years, some studies havefound that the final representation of the disambiguation of GP sentences isincomplete or not one hundred percent correct. The local ambiguity is a heavy burdenfor parsing, which leads to the incomplete disambiguation. Some scholars attributethis phenomenon to the limited cognition resource of a parser (Ferreira & Patson,2017).Compared with native English speakers, Chinese English leaners' languageproficiency is limited and they are easy to produce incomplete or even wrongunderstanding of a garden path sentence, into which there is not much relevantresearch. One purpose of the present study is to simply determine whether the subjectswho differ in second language proficiency and gender would show significant androbust differences in their comprehension of GP sentences. We try to explore thefactors, like second language proficiency and gender differences, that may affect theunderstanding of GP sentences among Chinese English learners. In addition, we areinterested in whether these differences between groups would affect their parsingstrategy.

Chapter Two Literature Review

In this chapter, the definitions and classifications of GP (garden path) sentencesare introduced first. Then come the latest approaches and theories concemning GPsentence comprehension, including Bever's syntactic appoaches and other scholars'semantic plus syntactic approaches. And the last part is the influencin
