Just as Gu Mingyuan (2017) said, thelast three decades witnessed the rapid development of the postgraduates’ education andcultivated a large number of talents with high quality for our country. In terms of Englishpostgraduates, according to the statistics of English major postgraduate enrollment from 210universities, (Wang Xuemei, 2017) there is an annual intake of 8100 people. Besides, in 1981,there are only 28 MA programs in English Language and Literature, while up to 2017, morethan 200 universities and institutions have grant rights of MA in English Language andLiterature and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, revealing that English MajorPostgraduate education cultivated a large number of high-quality talents for our country. Andthey take an important role in educational, cultural, economic and diplomatic fields.The postgraduate education in China has obtained outstanding achievements; however,along with the development of social, subject, and personal demands, the traditional educationsystem reveals some limitations in curriculum setting, teaching materials, and teachingevaluation, leading to the result that the postgraduates are deficient in innovative capacity andacademic quality. According to China’s Education Human Resources Development Report(2017), it reveals that the investigation involves about 97 universities, 20 institutions and 1000English postgraduates’ tutors, showing that 59.6% of the postgraduates’ tutors reckon thequality of the postgraduates is decreasing due to the following problems. (1) the level, type andgoal of the cultivation is not clear; (2) the educational system lacks in flexibility; (3) thecurriculum setting is not reasonable; (4) the encouragement mechanism is insufficient. Fromthe illustrations above, it can be identified and concluded that the reasons are focusing on themacro education system or macro curriculum setting. And correspondingly, more researchesconcern these aspects. However, comparatively speaking, there is a little literature concerningthe postgraduates’ academic competence and development.Then under the specific context, in order to improve the quality of graduate education andmeet the needs of the development of China’s education, some graduate schools attach greatimportance to the Postgraduate Training Program (2017), showing clear objective of theimprovement of graduates’ research competence:This training program aims to cultivate the English talent with full scale development ofvirtue, wisdom, and body.
