Chapter I Introduction
1.1 Background of the research
To learn English well, one must start with English words. However, it is difficult tomemorize English words and it is easy to forget them, this makes the studentsannoyed. All of us have the same experience that even though we have memorizedhundreds or even thousands of words, it seems as if there were only scores ofavailable, or just several hundred. The other words do not come to our minds even ifwe rack our brains. When the author was studying in normal school, the author oftengot distressed about small number of English words storage and low memoryefficiency. During my English teaching experience of more than ten years inelementary school, the author found the memorizing of English words was what madeboth teachers and students upset most. Especially in rural areas, most parents of thestudents are migrant workers, who have neither ability nor enough time to instructtheir children memorize vocabularies after school, let alone have their childrenenrolled in a tutorial class. As a result, the children are deprived of a good family andsocial study environment. At school, most teachers only care about their teachingschedule and students' marks, and pay no attention to the age characteristics, thecognitive and psychological characteristics of the students. So the students are forcedto copy a large number of English words and their methods of memorizing thesewords are limited. They memorize the words by means of spelling, reading andreciting, however, guidance on their memorizing of words is basically not involved. Most of the students think it's boring to memorize English words and gradually losetheir interest, which does great harm to their passion in English study.
In view of the pupils' painful rote repetition of reciting and reading on Englishwords, the author can't resist thinking whether there are cleverer methods for them sothat they will not suffer so much anymore. Words are arranged in alphabetical order inthe word list of current textbooks, which is helpful for Reference but not consistentwith the memory habit of the students. So they will easily get tired of them. What'smore, this kind of word arrangement separates related words groups, so the wordsbecome isolated and separated. The students have been accustomed to this pattern ofarrangement and memorizing words according to this model. However, this results innot only their high forgetting rate, but their unscientific mode of thinking and theirunscientific structure of knowledge. Therefore, the author have been trying to pursuean easy and scientific method in my life and study.
In the learning process of my graduate course, the author came to know that mindmapping is a kind of advanced mind tool, which organizes and represents knowledgeby visual schema, and keeps records of language points and thinking process.Meanwhile, the author found although words seem to be meaningless combinations ofletters, there still exist certain connections between diffe
