Chapter 1 Introduction引言
Classroom questioning is a very important teaching approach, which plays an irreplaceable role in highschool English teaching. Classroom questioning is an interactive activity between teachers and students,which can inspire students’ thinking, stimulate their interests in learning and cultivate their ability ofdivergent thinking and creativity. Nevertheless, it is found that there still exist some problems in classroomquestioning.
1.1 Research Background and Significance探讨背景和意义
Since the 1950s and 1960s, classroom teaching has been observed and researched systematically anddeeply in the western language teaching (Moskowitz, 1968), which is helpful for us to improve ourunderstanding of teaching and learning (杨敏, 2017). Teaching is an ongoing process to ask and answerquestions. Furthermore, teaching is an important means to inspire students' thinking, to teach the basicknowledge, to control the teaching process and to carry out classroom feedback. The core of classroomprocedures is questions teachers, answers students and teachers’ feedback to students’ answers(Bellack, 1966). English classroom questioning refers to teaching prompt or transfer of simulation onlearning content, or instructions to students on what to do and how to do. Questioning, as a method generallyused by teachers in classroom teaching, plays an important role in the classroom. Questioning is the mostpopular teacher-student interaction in English classroom. Questioning can guide students to explore a way toachieve the target and to culture students’ habits and ability of good thinking. Questioning is the major carrierof effective teaching. The main functions of questioning are as follows: firstly, through questioning, teachingcan be effectively organized and examined. Teachers can obtain information and feedback of both teachersand students on way of questioning. students’ answers, teachers can learn about students’ masteringlevel of old lessons and their understanding degree of new courses under questioning circumstance. Throughanswering teachers’ questions, students can get access to learning information and feedback and find outlearning doubts and weaknesses for self-regulation. The classroom atmosphere is the product ofteacher-student interaction and student-student interaction. In the classroom, teachers should try to create areal scenario and design questions which can help students be active. High school English courses should beemphasized on improving students’ ability to use English to obtain information, process information, analyzeproblems and solve problems on the basis of the further development of students’ comprehensive ability touse language. High school English courses should be particularly focused on students’ ability to think andexpress in English (普通高中英语课程标准(实验), 2017). This goal can be reached by achievement ofrelationship between teachers and students through classroom teaching. During classes, teachers shouldcreate a good environment for language acquisition for students by asking questions in order to makequestioning maximize its multiple functions.
