With the advent of the information age and the global economy, English has becomeincreasingly important. English is the dominant carrier of information and the most widely spokenlanguage in the world. Many countries have made English a cornerstone of quality Educationwhen developing strategies for basic education. Since China’s reform and opening, the scale of itsEnglish education has continually grown, attended by significant achievements in teaching andlearning. However, English education in its current form is failing to meet the needs ofcontemporary social and economic development (英语课程标准,英语毕业论文,2017,1).Therefore, in July 2017, the Ministry of Education promulgated the English CurriculumStandard for Senior High School (Experiment) that strives to accomplish far more than just helpstudents learn English. The curriculum puts forward quality education (as opposed toexam-orientated education) and the all-round development of the students. To promote qualityeducation, at one level, particular attention must be paid to uing each student’s feelings,stimulating students’ interest in learning English, and helping students gain a sense of achievementand self-confidence. At another level the curriculum must go beyond developing students’comprehensive language competence to include areas such as: improving students’ ability tocontribute to cultural and social life, developing students’ practical abilities, and especiallyfostering students’ innovative ability. The newly-promulgated the National Education Plan for thenext decade in July 2017 by the Party Central Committee and the State Council regards seniorsecondary school education as the key period of students’ personality formation and autonomydevelopment and the stage also plays a special role in improving national quality and cultivatinginnovative talents (教育规划纲要, 2017). Both of these two documents promote that cultivatingsenior high school students’ innovative ability in learning process, which has become not only animportant idea of educational reform, but also one of the hottest topics in the English educationalfield.Over the latest few decades, many reforms have been carried out in China, various advancedteaching methods have been explored, new language learning theories have been introduced andmuch research on teaching and leaning also has been undertaken. Even the multimedia has beenwidely used in the teaching process, especially in those municipal schools. At one hand thesereforms are undoubtedly beneficial to many aspects and it proves that Chinese education has alsomade great progress. However, at another hand, China’s education today still has somedeficiencies in the light of these two documents. Influenced by these deficiencies ofexamination-oriented education system and teacher-centered classroom teaching approaches for along time past, it is difficult for senior high school students to become autonomous in languagelearning, not to speak of their creativity.
