Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Nowadays, with the high speed development of globalization, the communication betweencountries in politics, economy, culture and Education has become more obvious than ever.Language plays a very important role in the worldwide spread of information and technology,and the sharing of education recourses. Among thousands of languages in the world, Englishmust be the most widely used one. Therefore, English teaching has become an important part incitizenship education in many countries. In order to strengthen communication and cooperationbetween countries and regions, foreign language learning and teaching in China has becomeever more vital.With the needs of the society, Ordinary High School New English Curriculum Standards(hereinafter referred to as the “NECS”) issued by the Ministry of Education, modified somecontents of English curriculum, and put forward new requests for high school English teachingand learning. In the NECS 2017, it clearly states that: Based on English learning in compulsoryeducation stage, the NECS has further defined the purpose of English study in order to improvethe ability of autonomous learning and cooperative learning; to further develop students’integrated language capability at the same time. Study in senior high school will focus onimproving to obtain information, process information, analyze problems and solve problems byusing English and increasing the students’ ability of thinking and expressing in English. Thehigh school English curriculum should also be consistent with the characteristics and the needsof the development of students, and provide abundant opportunities for them.

1.2 Purpose of the Study
Generally speaking, there are three main purposes for textbook analysis and evaluation:selecting a new textbook; testing the effectiveness of a textbook; and designing a textbook. Thisstudy will focus on these three editions of textbooks which have been widely used in recentyears in China: The New Senior English for China (hereinafter referred to as “NSEFC”)published by People’s Education Press, Advance with English (hereinafter referred to as the“AWE”) jointly published by Yilin Press and Group of Phoenix Publication, and Senior HighEnglish (hereinafter referred to as the “SHE”) published by Pearson Education Asia and BeijingNormal University Press cooperatively. This thesis attempts to compare these three populareditions of English textbooks which have been put into use for years. In this thesis, the mainpurpose must be testing the effectiveness of a textbook. To be more particular, according to therequirements of the New English Curriculum Standards, the present thesis aims to identify thesimilarities, differences and particular strength and weakness of these three editions oftextbooks. Meanwhile, combining plentiful relative materials about textbook evaluation whichhave already existed both at home and abroad, the author tries to present an all-round textbookevaluation respectively from macroscopic and microscopic dimensions which include structure,knowledge, culture, pragmatics and after-class exercises and provide some useful suggestionsfor compilers and teachers.
