1.1 Research Background
Reading is a skill to absorb language materials, add language knowledge and enlarge vocabulary; it is also an important way of gaining the language input for the language learners. For the students who learn English as a second/foreign language, reading is a basic skill (Anderson, 2017). For most students, reading ability is themost important skill that they need to master in order to succeed in learning English.Wen Qiufang (2017) said that reading was regarded as the first goal to reach amongthe four skills in middle school English teaching. The task of the New NationalEnglish Curriculum Standards for High School is to cultivate the students’ interest andenhance their confidence in learning English, help them form good ability of learning.Teachers should teach students effective learning strategies, help them becomecooperative and independent learners, and make students able to grasp basicknowledge and skills of English language in listening, speaking, reading and writingso as to develop their sufficient competence in using the English language (HaoHuizhen and Pan Bingxin, 2017). According to the Curriculum Standards, the purposeof teaching English reading is to train students and make them read more efficientlyand form appropriate habit and strong interest in reading.For senior high school students, reading is the basic skill that the students shouldmaster in order to develop the other three skills effectively. Professor Hu Chundong---the prominent expert of English teaching: “Chinese should emphasize thedevelopment of reading ability, if we want to learn English. If not, we cannot learnEnglish completely.” Chen Jingbo (2017): “One doesn’t know how to learn English ifhe/she doesn’t know how to read. Reading is the priority if one wants to learnlistening, writing and expression in the right way.”

But in the real English classroom, there are some problems in teaching reading.Firstly, many English teachers may not be aware of the importance of cultivatingstudents reading strategies or techniques in the process of teaching reading while they only teach students the language itself. Secondly, students may not be aware ofreading strategies and applying reading strategies in their reading process. Manyteachers maybe don’t know enough knowledge about reading strategies so that theyignore how to strengthen students' ability of applying English and perform readingstrategies training in their classrooms. Especially, they ignore to develop the students’ability of analyzing discourse and mastering reading skills. So they make theirstudents spend a lot of time and energy in doing many reading comprehensions, butthe students can not get satisfactory result.
